By now it’s pretty obvious, I am a major smoothie lover. It’s funny how I went from really not liking chocolate, to loving this chocolate cherry bomb smoothie. It’s not just good for being a healthy smoothie, it’s just really, really good.
The base of this smoothie is made of frozen bananas and frozen cherries. The frozen bananas make it so creamy and frosty; it tastes just like a chocolate milkshake. Bananas really are a super food. When I first cut out sugar, I cut out a lot of fruit too, like bananas. As time went on, I started to incorporate all fruits back into my diet, and I am glad I did! Although bananas are high in sugar, they are also high in fiber and have many health benefits. They give you tons of energy, actually stabilize your blood sugar, help prevent muscle cramps and are high in many vitamins and minerals. The list goes on, bananas are good for every part of you. They also feel like your eating a treat, and seriously make smoothies. I wait for my bananas to get nice and ripe, and then I peel them and freeze them, this way I always have frozen bananas to work with. A freezer full of frozen bananas is a very good thing.
The frozen cherries add a delicious flavor, not to mention tons of antioxidants. Cherries are also very anti-inflammatory, and can help reduce post exercise muscle pain and arthritis pain. I buy organic frozen cherries from the supermarket. It’s amazing to have cherries on hand like that without doing any of the dirty work removing the pits. Plus, by using them frozen, it creates an extra frosty smoothie.
I added some powder super foods to this smoothie to pack in a big nutritional punch. Cacao powder is full of iron and magnesium, hemp powder or seeds add protein, and chia seeds add your omega 3’s. This smoothie really has all your food groups covered.
The chocolate cherry bomb has a secret. It has a huge, undetectable handful of spinach. You literally cannot taste it, and you can’t see it because of the chocolaty amazing cacao powder and dark cherries. This is the perfect smoothie for any little ones or grownups that get squeamish about eating things that are too “green.” Just do yourself a favor, don’t tell them!!
I like to use coconut water to make smoothies, but almond or coconut milk would work well too. My favorite kind of coconut water is Harmless Harvest 100% Raw Coconut Water. It has no additives, and is raw, which preserves all of its nutrients. It’s also delicious, super refreshing, and adds some natural sweetness to your smoothies.
I topped of this chocolaty creation with some cacao nibs just to add some extra chocolate and crunch. This is a thick smoothie, so feel free to add more liquid if you like thinner smoothies. I like to eat mine with a spoon and a straw. This would make the perfect summer breakfast, snack or light lunch. I hope you enjoy!
